What the texts say

न नक्तं दधि भुञ्जीत न चाप्यघृतशर्करम्| नामुद्गयूषं नाक्षौद्रं नोष्णं नामलकैर्विना
na naktaṃ dadhi bhuñjīta na cāpyaghṛtaśarkaram| nāmudgayūṣaṃ nākṣaudraṃ noṣṇaṃ nāmalakairvinā
Do not eat curd at night, nor hot, nor without ghee, sugar, green gram soup, honey or amla.[1]

The word in the verse is mudgayūṣa, a soup of green gram (moong, मूंग). Charaka names this one soup, not pulses in general, and gives no reason for it and no amount.[1]

The modern view

We found no study that has tested curd eaten with moong soup or dal. The search was not fully screened, so this is a limit of what we looked at.

Questions people ask

Can I eat moong dal with curd at night?

The same verse says not to eat curd at night. It does not say that green gram soup changes that.[1]

Does the rule cover other dals, such as urad or chana?

No. The verse names green gram soup only and says nothing about other pulses.[1]
