Curd and sugar (dahi-chini)

Charaka names sugar as one of the things curd should be eaten with. Dahi-chini is on his list of accompaniments, not his list of things to avoid.

What the texts say

न नक्तं दधि भुञ्जीत न चाप्यघृतशर्करम्| नामुद्गयूषं नाक्षौद्रं नोष्णं नामलकैर्विना
na naktaṃ dadhi bhuñjīta na cāpyaghṛtaśarkaram| nāmudgayūṣaṃ nākṣaudraṃ noṣṇaṃ nāmalakairvinā
Do not eat curd at night, nor hot, nor without ghee, sugar, green gram soup, honey or amla.[1]

Sugar is one of five foods Charaka says should go with curd. In the Sanskrit, ghee and sugar share a single word (ghṛtaśarkaram). The edition we opened translates them as separate choices, which is the reading we follow here. Verse 7.62 then names the illnesses that can come to a lover of curd who ignores these rules, among them fever, anaemia and severe jaundice.[1][2]

The modern view

We found no study that tests Charaka's rule.

Questions people ask

Does Ayurveda say curd with sugar is harmful?

Not in this verse. Charaka puts sugar on the list of things to eat curd with, not on a list of things to avoid.[1]

Is curd with sugar good for health?

Charaka puts sugar among the right ways to eat curd, and the next verse warns of illness, such as fever and jaundice, when curd is eaten against these rules. That is a rule about how to eat curd, not a health claim for sugar.[1][2]
