What the texts say
Charaka gives no reason for this list. Amla comes last in a run of fruits that ends with 'everything sour', but the text does not say whether amla is barred for its sourness, or whether fresh or dried fruit is meant. That needs the commentaries.[1]
The modern view
We have not found a modern study that tests amla taken with milk. The rule comes from the classical text alone.

Questions people ask
Can I drink milk after eating amla?
Charaka's wording is 'with milk', and he sets no waiting time. The texts we opened do not say how long to leave between the two.[1]
Does this apply to amla powder or medicines that contain amla?
The verse is about food and does not mention powders or medicines. If a vaidya has told you to take an amla preparation with milk, ask them about this rule.[1]
