What the texts say

न मूलकलशुनकृष्णगन्धार्जकसुमुखसुरसादीनि भक्षयित्वा पयः सेव्यं, कुष्ठाबाधभयात्
na mūlakalaśunakṛṣṇagandhārjakasumukhasurasādīni bhakṣayitvā payaḥ sevyaṃ, kuṣṭhābādhabhayāt
After eating radish, garlic, krishnagandha, arjaka, sumukha, surasa (tulsi) and the like, one should not take milk, for fear of kushtha.[1]

Charaka's reason is fear of kushtha, which the edition we used translates as skin diseases. Surasa, which that edition renders as tulsi, is named with radish, garlic and similar plants.[1]

The modern view

We have not found a modern study that tests milk taken after tulsi. The rule comes from the classical text alone.
