The short answer
No studies found. We found no study of haritaki (harad) taken with warfarin, in people or in animals. A rat study of haritaki and six liver enzymes found no effect on CYP2C9, the main enzyme that clears warfarin. It did find that haritaki slowed CYP2C19, which handles part of one form of warfarin (R-warfarin).
What that means for people is not known. Warfarin has a narrow safe range, and its label advises extra INR checks whenever a herbal product is started or stopped. If you take warfarin, tell your prescribing doctor before you start haritaki or Triphala, and ask whether your INR should be checked.
Warfarin is sold in India as Warf.
At a glance
| What was seen | How it may work | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| In rats, no effect on CYP2C9; CYP2C19 slowed[1] | CYP2C19 handles part of R-warfarin; CYP2C9, the main warfarin pathway, was unchanged | Unknown for warfarin; human relevance unknown | Animal |
No listing is not a clearance. A missing interaction here never means a combination is safe.
The evidence, study by study
Rat study, 2020 Animal
Rats were given haritaki for 15 days, then a set of test drugs by injection to measure six liver enzymes. Haritaki slowed CYP2E1 and CYP2C19 but had no effect on CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP3A4 or CYP2D6. No warfarin was given, and the abstract gives no doses or numbers. Animal results like this show where to look. They cannot tell us what happens in people.[1]
What your doctor may watch for
- INR, especially when you start or stop haritaki or any other herbal product. A raised INR means blood takes longer to clot.[2]
- Unusual bleeding or bruising.[2]
What to tell your prescribing doctor
You can read this out, or show them this page:
“I am taking, or planning to take, haritaki or Triphala (name of product, how much) along with warfarin. No study has tested the two together. Should my INR be checked after I start or stop it?”

Triphala and blood thinners like warfarin
No study has tested triphala with warfarin. In the lab, triphala slowed an enzyme that breaks warfarin down, which could strengthen its effect.
InteractionHaritaki (harad) and other medicines you swallow
We found no study of haritaki and medicine absorption. One patient's antidepressant seemed to stop working on herbal mixtures with haritaki.
InteractionTurmeric and blood thinners
Two reports describe a raised INR after turmeric in people on warfarin-type blood thinners. Blood thinners leave little margin.
InteractionGuggulu and blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel)
Lab studies suggest guggul speeds up a liver enzyme that helps clear warfarin. Which way the INR would move is not known, and no study tested the pair.
