What the texts say
Charaka calls this parihara viruddha, an incompatibility in what is taken afterwards. The verse says "cold", not "cold water", so it covers cold things in general. It also says "having drunk" ghee, and does not say whether a little ghee on rice or roti counts. It gives no reason, and it does not make a rule about water after all meals.[1]
The modern view
We found no study that tests this rule. Our search was not fully screened, so a study may exist that we did not find.
