What the texts say
Charaka calls this parihara viruddha, an incompatibility in what is taken afterwards. The same verse gives the mirror rule for pork and similar meats, after which hot things are incompatible. Its word is "cold", not "cold water", so it covers cold food and drink in general. It speaks of ghee that has been drunk, and the rule is tied to ghee, not to water after every meal.[1]
The modern view
We found no study that tests this rule.
