What the texts say

यच्चानुत्सृज्य विण्मूत्रं भुङ्क्ते यश्चाबुभुक्षितः| तच्च क्रमविरुद्धं स्याद्यच्चातिक्षुद्वशानुगः
yaccānutsṛjya viṇmūtraṃ bhuṅkte yaścābubhukṣitaḥ| tacca kramaviruddhaṃ syādyaccātikṣudvaśānugaḥ
Eating without first passing stool and urine, eating when not hungry, and eating when overcome by extreme hunger: these are incompatible in order.[1]

Charaka files this under krama viruddha, incompatibility of order, one of the kinds of incompatible eating he lists in Sutra Sthana 26. The verse gives no further reason. It is about when to eat, not a reason to keep food from someone who is hungry: the same line warns against letting hunger become extreme.[1]

The modern view

We found no study that tests Charaka's rule. Our search was broad but not fully screened, so this is the limit of what we looked at.
