The short answer
Not known in people. In mice and rats, fenugreek (methi) seed extract lowered T3, the more active thyroid hormone, and raised T4. The authors think methi may slow the change of T4 into T3. Levothyroxine is T4, so this could matter, but it has not been tested in anyone taking the drug.
We found no study of methi with levothyroxine. The levothyroxine label says dietary fibre lowers how much of the drug is absorbed, but this has not been tested for methi seeds or methi water. If you take levothyroxine and use methi as a remedy, tell your prescribing doctor, and ask whether your TSH should be rechecked.
Levothyroxine is sold in India as Thyronorm and Eltroxin.
At a glance
| What was seen | How it may work | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower T3 and higher T4 with seed extract (mice and rats)[1] | Possibly slower conversion of T4 to T3 | Could change the response to levothyroxine; not tested | Animal |
| Lower T3 and T4 in rats made hyperthyroid by injected thyroxine (fenugreek and garlic extracts)[2] | Not established | Says nothing about absorption of levothyroxine tablets | Animal |
| Dietary fibre lowers levothyroxine absorption[3] | Fibre in the gut | Less levothyroxine absorbed; not tested for methi | Theoretical by mechanism |
No listing is not a clearance. A missing interaction here never means a combination is safe.
The evidence, study by study
Mouse and rat study, 1999 Animal
Adult male mice and rats were given fenugreek seed extract for 15 days. Their T3 and the ratio of T3 to T4 fell, while T4 and body weight rose. The authors suggest the seed slows the body's conversion of T4 into T3. None of the animals received levothyroxine, and the number of animals is not given in the summary.[1]
Rat study, 2003 Animal
Rats were made hyperthyroid with daily thyroxine injections, then given fenugreek extract, garlic extract, both together, or the antithyroid drug propylthiouracil. The extracts lowered T3 and T4, and the pair did no better than each alone. Because the hormone was injected, this cannot show whether methi affects levothyroxine tablets in the gut.[2]
What your doctor may watch for
- TSH and free T4, on the schedule your thyroid doctor sets. The levothyroxine label describes it as a narrow therapeutic index drug that needs lab monitoring.[3]
What to tell your prescribing doctor
You can read this out, or show them this page:
“I take levothyroxine and I am taking, or planning to take, methi (seeds, soaked water, powder or capsules, and how much). In animals, methi changed thyroid hormone levels. Should my TSH be rechecked, and is there anything about how I take methi that I should change?”

Questions people ask
Is methi in food different from methi water or capsules?
Nobody has tested any form of methi with levothyroxine. The animal studies used concentrated seed extract, so they cannot tell us whether everyday cooking amounts make any difference.[1]
Is there a tested time gap between methi water and Thyronorm?
No. We found no study of any gap between methi and levothyroxine. The label's warning about fibre is general and gives no methi-specific rule, so ask your prescribing doctor.[3]

Methi lowered blood sugar further when added to diabetes medicines in two trials. How often that causes low sugar was not measured well.
ConditionUnderactive thyroid (hypothyroidism): what Ayurveda offers
One small trial found ashwagandha improved mildly raised TSH. No trial we found tested Ayurveda in place of levothyroxine. Do not stop it.
InteractionAshwagandha and thyroid medicines
Ashwagandha can raise thyroid hormone levels. That could add to levothyroxine, or work against antithyroid drugs.
InteractionBrahmi and thyroid medicines
Not tested in people. In mice, a brahmi extract raised the thyroid hormone T4 by 41%, which could matter if you take a thyroid medicine.
