The short answer
Gokshuradi Guggulu is a tablet of guggulu resin cooked down in a strong decoction of gokshura fruit, then mixed with triphala, dry ginger, black pepper, pippali and musta. The Ayurvedic Formulary of India lists it for urinary complaints such as painful urination, blocked urine and stones, and for prameha (urinary disorders), vaginal discharge, gout (vatarakta), vata disorders and disorders of semen.
We have not found a study of it in people. A 28-day rat study found no toxic effects at the doses it tested, which tells us little about long-term use in people. Both main herbs have their own interaction pages: gokshura with lithium and blood pressure medicines, guggulu with thyroid medicines and blood thinners. If you take any of these, tell your prescribing doctor first.
What is in it
The official recipe is in the Ayurvedic Formulary of India, Part I (2003), entry 5:3 Goksuradi Guggulu, printed pages 67 and 68.[1]
| Ingredient | Botanical name | Part used | Proportion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gokshura | Tribulus terrestris | Fruit | 1.344 kg |
| Water for decoction | - | - | 8.064 l, reduced to 4.032 l |
| Pura (guggulu), purified | Commiphora wightii | Exudate | 336 g |
| Shunthi (dry ginger) | Zingiber officinale | Rhizome | 48 g |
| Marica (black pepper) | Piper nigrum | Fruit | 48 g |
| Pippali (long pepper) | Piper longum | Fruit | 48 g |
| Haritaki | Terminalia chebula | Pericarp | 48 g |

| Amalaki (amla) | Emblica officinalis | Pericarp | 48 g |
| Musta | Cyperus rotundus | Rhizome | 48 g |
Quantities are for one batch, from the printed 2003 edition. The gokshura is boiled into a decoction, the guggulu is cooked down in it, and the powdered herbs are mixed in last. Makers' recipes can differ, so check the label.[1]
Classical source
The formulary takes the recipe from the Sharangadhara Samhita, Madhyama Khanda, chapter 7, verses 84 to 86.[1]
What it is used for
- The formulary lists it for prameha (urinary disorders), mutrakricchra (painful urination), mutraghata (blocked urine) and ashmari (stones).[1]
- It also lists pradara (excess vaginal discharge), vatarakta (gout), vataroga (vata disorders) and shukradosha (disorders of semen).[1]
What the evidence says
AnimalRats were given Gokshuradi Guggulu once at 2,700 mg/kg, and in a second test daily for 28 days at 270, 1,350 or 2,700 mg/kg. The study reported no toxic effects at these doses. The abstract does not give the number of rats. A short rat study can flag serious harm; it cannot show that long-term use is harmless in people.[2]
Safety notes
- Gokshura, the main herb, has its own interaction pages. See Gokshura and lithium, Gokshura and blood pressure medicines, and Gokshura and metformin.
- Guggulu has its own interaction pages. See Guggulu and thyroid medicines, Guggulu and blood thinners, and Guggulu and statins.
- Contains black pepper and pippali. In a small study of people with epilepsy, a single dose of piperine, a compound in pippali and black pepper, raised blood levels of phenytoin. That study used isolated piperine, not this tablet. See Pippali and phenytoin.[3]
- Our search for side-effect reports and regulator alerts on this product is not complete. Finding none so far is not a sign that it is harmless.
Who makes it

Questions people ask
Is Gokshuradi Guggulu used for kidney stones?
The formulary lists ashmari (stones) and blocked or painful urination among its uses. That is the classical listing, not a trial result, and we have not found a study of it in people with stones.[1]
Related
Gokshura (gokhru) and lithium
Tribulus may act as a diuretic, and lithium levels rise when the body loses water or salt. We found no study of the two together.
InteractionGokshura (gokhru) and blood pressure medicines
Gokshura lowered blood pressure on its own in one trial, so it could add to BP medicines. We found no study of the two taken together.
InteractionGuggulu and thyroid medicine (levothyroxine)
Guggul raised thyroid hormone in mice. The one human trial in people on levothyroxine used a multi-herb tablet and cannot show guggul's own effect.
FormulationChandraprabha Vati
A classical tablet used for urinary complaints. It is not purely herbal: it contains iron and copper pyrite ashes, camphor, sugar and danti.
